the mission of cedaps is to improve health and quality of life of poor communities in brazil, through health promotion and community development programs, advocacy and research. for cedaps, health is an equivalent to equity and quality of life, attained by improving access to basic social resources such as education, a healthy environment, housing, work, culture, recreation, good nutrition, security and health care services. cedaps empowers communities to become active stakeholders, generating solutions with available resources, and networking in order to obtain more resources and to participate in public policies; creates and test new models for public policies, improving their quality, increasing equity and health. cedaps started co-creating a comprehensive primary health care model that eventually became the family health strategy in brazil, now covering 100 million people. it created and coordinates the network of healthy communities, with 150 grassroots groups in favelas (slums) in rio and other states, where more than 1.4 million people live. cedaps created the social technology “shared construction of solutions in health” that builds the capacity of community leaders, business leaders and public policy agents to analyze problems that affect communities, schools, companies and health programs, and to find solutions using available resources, creating sustainable changes. hundreds of social interventions benefit several thousands people in brazil. the main focuses of our work are: health promotion; prevention of hiv/aids; sustainable community development programs; urban health equity, urban governance; youth leadership and rights; public policy improvements; programs in primary health care services and public schools. in addition to community interventions and services, cedaps conducts research studies focused on the communities’ health and development issues. and several ngos and universities in brazil.
